Olive Oil Cuts Dementia Risk
An exciting new study shows that olive oil consumption can cut your risk of developing dementia. In a study of almost 100,000 adult participants over 28 years, consuming at least 7 grams of olive oil per day (the equivalent of two teaspoons) reduced the risk of dementia by almost one-third!
Olive oil has many beneficial compounds that enhance brain health, including polyphenols and mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. These bioactive compounds protect the brain by reducing inflammation, defending against free radical damage, boosting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, promoting cardiovascular health, and enhancing the health of your gut microbiome.
One particularly fascinating finding from this study is that the risk of dementia was reduced even more for those who substituted mayonnaise and margarine with olive oil, but not for butter or other vegetable oils. This proves that we should use natural oils in our diets (whether it is butter or vegetable oils) and avoid synthetic, fake trans/hydrogenated fats at all costs.
It is quite simple to increase your consumption of olive oil. It has a fruity flavor that complements a wide variety of dishes. You can use olive oil as a salad dressing, add it to any dish, or even use it in desserts.
