Moderate Coffee Consumption Prevents Cardiometabolic Disease
In a new study published in the Endocrine Society journal, researchers found that habitually consuming moderate amounts of caffeine, coffee, and/or tea reduces the risk of cardiometabolic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, and stroke) in healthy people.
This study involved almost 200,000 subjects with no prior history of cardiometabolic disease. This group was drawn from more than 500,000 participants aged between 37-73 years of age in a large longitudinal diet study called the UK Biobank. Subjects who consumed 200-300 mg of caffeine per day (or about 3 cups of coffee) were about 50% less likely to be diagnosed with cardiometabolic disease.
This study adds to the growing body of scientific literature into the complex benefits and effects of caffeine on the body. There is more evidence supporting the health benefits of caffeine but it is important to understand the potential drawbacks of caffeine usage. While healthy people can easily consume 3 cups of coffee daily, some people are more sensitive to effects of caffeine.
For example, people with migraine generally can drink about 1-2 cups of coffee a day but begin to experience more migraine attacks once they exceed that amount. Some people with migraine are more sensitive and may not tolerate any amount of caffeine. People with anxiety experience an increase in anxiety if they drink more than 1-3 cups of coffee a day; even small amounts may be intolerable in those with severe anxiety. There is some scientific evidence that certain genetic variations of the adenosine receptor may cause more sensitivity to caffeine intake. Furthermore, certain cardiac conditions like atrial fibrillation may be aggravated by caffeine consumption.
In conclusion, moderate amounts of caffeine has potential health benefits. People who do not have significant medical problems that could be aggravated by caffeine should consider consuming some caffeine on a regular basis. The best source of caffeine are coffee, tea, and chocolate. Avoid beverages that contain excessive amounts of sugar, cream, preservatives, or artificial colors and flavors.
